Greek School

Welcome to Greek School of Kimisis Tis Theotokou!

At our school, we don’t just teach the Greek language – we bring it to life through vibrant experiences that connect our students to the rich tapestry of Greek culture and history. Our students take center stage in a variety of exciting celebrations that highlight the beauty of our traditions.

Each year, our students share their joy and creativity during our Christmas performances, filling the air with festive cheer as they sing, dance, and celebrate the holiday season. We also unite with surrounding churches for the Feast of the Three Hierarchs, where our students are part of a collective celebration that fosters community, faith, and a shared love of Greek heritage.

Our pride extends to the streets of New York City, where our students proudly march in the Greek Independence Day Parade, waving the Greek flag high and honoring the incredible history of Greece’s fight for freedom. Closer to home, they take part in OXI Day and March 25th commemorations, bringing history to life through powerful performances that celebrate Greece’s resilience and independence.

At the Greek School of Kimisis, every lesson is an opportunity for our students to connect, celebrate, and grow in their love for the Greek language and culture, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

MEET OUR TEACHERS

Evangelia Dounis- Greek School Director

I was raised in New York by Greek parents and began my education at St. Demetrios in Astoria, where my love for the language and culture first took root. Summers in Sfakia, Crete with my grandparents deepened that connection and shaped my identity in lasting ways.

I earned a degree in Linguistics with a minor in Modern Greek from CUNY Queens College, followed by two Master’s degrees—one in TESOL and one in School Administration. For over 20 years, I’ve worked in education as a public school teacher supporting students, mentoring educators, and helping schools grow.

Currently in my 4th year as your director, I’m thrilled to continue to share my passion for the Greek language and culture with your children, helping them develop pride in their heritage while fostering a love for learning.

Despina Markos- Greek School Teacher

I’ve been teaching PreK Greek school for over 10 years, and my passion for sharing the Greek language and culture with children grows every day. After attending the Archdiocese Greek School Seminar in Cyprus, I received certification and gained a deeper understanding of how to connect with students. My teaching philosophy is simple: learning should be fun! I love incorporating hands-on activities that engage students and make lessons come to life. It’s truly rewarding to see them excited about what they’re learning and proud of their heritage.

Maria Plakas- Greek School Teacher

I was born in Athens, Greece, and moved to the U.S. at a young age, where I attended Kimisis Tis Theotokou Greek-American Elementary School in Brooklyn. There, I excelled in Greek language and earned a perfect score on the Greek Regents, along with the highest award of excellence from the Archdiocese. This early success sparked my love for teaching.

I went on to earn my degree in Elementary Education, a second Bachelor's in Child Psychology, and a minor in photography from CUNY Brooklyn College. Now, in my 8th year of teaching Greek school, I’m excited to pass on my passion for our language and culture to the next generation.

I live in Holmdel with my husband and our triplet girls, and we love traveling to Greece to visit family and reconnect with our roots.

Roula Tsoukaris- Greek School Teacher

I was born in Queens, NY, but my heart has always been rooted in Chios, Greece, where I spent my formative years immersed in the language and culture that shape who I am today. For over 20 years, I’ve had the privilege of working with children in various capacities, from tutoring to teaching Greek. I was honored to be the first teacher at Kimisis Holmdel to guide students in successfully passing the Comprehensive Examination in Modern Greek, administered by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.

Teaching Greek is not just my job—it’s my passion. I love connecting with children of all ages, sharing the beauty of our language, and helping them develop a deeper appreciation for their heritage. I’m always seeking new ways to enrich my teaching, so I regularly attend seminars offered by the Archdiocese to stay on top of effective methods and strategies.

Niki Melissaratos- Greek School Teacher

My name is Niki—Kyria Niki to my students! I was born in New Jersey to Greek parents and moved to Greece at age 8, where I attended Greek schools and later studied Communications and Business at the University of Indianapolis, Athens campus. This is my first year teaching at Kimisis Greek School, and I’ve loved every moment. I enjoy helping students discover the joy of reading and writing in Greek through fun, creative activities. I’m also proud to have my two daughters learning alongside us as students at the school.
